In The Cup

This washed lot from the Nyabirongo station delivers a vibrant, refined cup with notes of blackcurrant, citrus, and ripe stone fruit, complemented by a delicate floral aroma and smooth caramel sweetness. Grown in the fertile foothills of Uganda’s Rwenzori Mountains, it highlights how well-suited this region is for producing exceptional quality coffee, offering clarity and complexity that rival more established origins.

The Story

Agri Evolve Ltd is a profit-for-purpose business supporting farmers in Uganda to increase yields, improve quality, and access better markets, helping them boost productivity and income for themselves, their families, and their communities. They are committed to local communities and the environment in the Rwenzori region. Smallholder farmers in Uganda face many challenges but have strong potential. Agri Evolve helps them realise this by promoting profitable, sustainable farming. Their current focus is coffee, alongside work with beekeepers and plans to expand into other farming sectors. Buzira is a community very close to the main coffee station at Nyabirongo in the southern part of the Rwenzoris. Agri Evolve have a strong connection with the community having helped to establish a clean water supply for the community in 2020. BUZIRA is the name chosen for their centrally processed washed coffee and they purchase cherries from a wide area within the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains.
SL14 and SL28 are well-known coffee varieties originally developed in Kenya, valued for their quality and resilience. SL28 is especially prized for its exceptional cup profile, often producing bright acidity, complex fruit notes, and a distinctive sweetness, making it popular in specialty coffee. SL14, while generally less complex in flavour, is appreciated for its higher yield and greater tolerance to certain growing conditions, making it a reliable choice for farmers. Together, they balance quality and productivity in coffee cultivation.
These cherries are pulped on arrival at Nyabirongo and then fermented in large tanks, usually for 24 hrs. After washing the resulting parchment is dried, either on raised beds or mechanically depending on a range of factors. When fully dried the parchment is stored in the warehouse until required for export. It is then hulled, graded and bagged ready for shipping.
